Community Service Events

The New Haven Girl Friends promote friendship through civic service in our local communities. Our chapter has sponsored a variety of events which support the work of local and national non-profit ogranizations.

Girl Friends held a day long Book Expo featuring workshops with local black authors including GF Lisa Harrison to promote the importance of reading.
Project Haiti - Soles 4 Souls March, 2010

Soles for Souls is a Nashville based charity that collects and distributes donated gently used shoes, free of charge to people in need. The New Haven Girl Friends ran a chapter drive and collected 250 pairs of new and used shoes for children, women and men for Project Haiti.

The New Haven Girl Friends were proud sponsors of The Community Healing Network's Youth and Community Summits featuring Dr. Joy DeGruy. The Network's mission is to celebrate healing in the Black community and to raise awareness and resources to help Black people find release and healing from the internalized myths of inferiority that undermine their full potential.
MEN OF DISTINCTION LUNCHEON MARCH 2006

Following the enormous success of the 2005 luncheon, the Country House Restaurant was the site for the second year of our Girl Friends tribute to African-American Men of Distinction. Proceeds of the event were donated to Dillard University Library, a historically black university, located in New Orleans, Louisiana.
MEN OF DISTINCTION...ON THE MOVE LUNCHEON AND FASHION SHOW April 2005
The Country House Restaurant was the site of our 2005 luncheon and fashion show. Themed "Men of Distinction...on the Move" the fashion show featured nearly 20 outstanding African-American men who have distinguished themselves in the business, civic, and religious life of our community. Proceeds of the event were dedicated to The New Haven Scholarship Fund, a New Haven based non-profit organization which provides scholarships for students from the New Haven Public Schools. This 2005 scholarship was given in memory of our dear Girl Friend Jackie Griffin.

Anthony's Ocean View in New Haven, Connecticut was the site of The Girl Friends 2004 annual luncheon and fashion show held to raise awareness and support for two important charities serving our community. Proceeds of the event were dedicated to All Our Kin, a New Haven based non-profit organization which teaches economic development and economic independance to women in the inner city by guiding them into the business of childcare and Sisters' Journey, providing breast cancer awareness, education, and support services for African-American women.
